The Plough

from Face To Face by Twelfth Day

/

about

This track was written for Esther’s grandad who told us that the most beautiful sound in the world is that of a horse drawn plough. The peace he felt as it slid through the earth when he was a boy has stayed with him until his now ripe age of 99. We found this a precious thing to know in our very loud, fast paced world, that we had to make music about it. This piece has turned out to have the highest number of layers on the whole record, despite being under a minute long. It is intended to replicate the sound of a plough passing by. After listening to some sounds of ploughs online we had a lot of fun playing with weird instrumental techniques and effects in the studio to layer up the sound of the horses hooves, the tinkling machinery, and the carving of the earth. A really enjoyable track to make, it was lovely writing something so short but with so many specific sounds
